Subject: Forage question

Ridgway, IL
We are in the middle of a drought in SE IL. Hay is scarce. Im looking for viable options to produce a short season forage crop. We have center pivot irrigation, and at the rate the corn crop is maturing, we will be harvesting corn aug 15 or sooner. I believe this would give me 45-60 days to potentially grow and harvest a crop. Chopping is unlikely, would prefer somthing to bale?

Will be mixed in a ration with stalks, straw, wdg, and corn for feedlot animals.

Any suggestions? Could i get enough growth on bin run srw? Should i look at trticale or somthing else? I have never seen anyone grow that locally. Any suggestions appreciated.

The normal plan would be for this farm to be disk ripped in the fall, and return to irrigated corn in the spring. Some of the irrigated farms are normally disked, then srw followed by double crop beans next year.

Ideas?

Thanks
