Chebanse, IL..... | Every once in a while for a reality check you have to reminisce with old photos & documents. I found this Dekalb seed order for our corn in 1954. Our Dad signed it. For those of you born just lately, hopefully you realize that once-upon-a-time seed corn was sold by the "bushel", which is 56# weight. With a MF, kernel count often exceeded 100,000 per bag, not the 80K we're buying today. Note also the date...apparently there wasn't the fall rush on ordering corn to assure the "best". I'm assuming we ordered the best in late March, probably less than 45 days from planting. The seed corn guy would usually bring you the corn the day you needed it also, not 6 mos prior to use for storage.
I am surprised there was a tentative "next years" order to be confirmed in the fall.
I was 5 1/2 when the order was signed.
