West Texas | Or, How Sand Dunes Get Started. West Texas soils seem to have a overly healthy population of termites. Most years, there's enough vegetation renewal that the activity of termites goes unnoticed. However, in a drought like Texas is experiencing now, there has been almost zero vegetative regrowth, and the action of termites in reducing ground cover is becoming ever more visible. Straw and other plant residue that comes into contact with soil soon becomes supper and termite poop. Result: soil OM profiles drop again. |
