Subject: rye grass-----what caused this in the soil

IL
I know of field of ryegrass sown last fall as a cover. Had a good stand. Good root mass. Beans were notilled into it, then ryegrass killed off. I walked out on the field a couple days ago, and it is as hard as concrete. Beans are decent, but could be better.
Yes, it was damp when planted, lots o rain in June. Then cooked out this summer. I had hoped the soil would have some softness to it, but I would be darn tempted to suggest a min. disterb ripper to let moistuer/o2 in .

feedback is appreciated.
