SE SD | Velvet leaf will germinate up to 4" inches deep in the presence of methane gas caused by anaerobic bacteria. By adding calcium, which helps loosen the soil, allowing the methane gas to escape. Have a friend in MN near SD border that grew velvetleaf very well. We applied calcium and had reduced the amount by about 50%. The next year we had a hard time finding any.
Lambsquarters likes and thrives in high "available K, MG and LOW available P and Ca. What I have found is the higher the level of available phos that gets into the plant the easier the lambsquarters are to kill. Just my observation. | |
