Subject: sick calf

i recently found an unexpectedly early new born calf ( would estimate 2 days old ) that appeared to not have nursed yet. i tried milking out the cow and then feeding the calf about 1 and 1/2 quarts of this milk via esophegheal feeder tube. the calf had been weak before ( appeared gaunt, but would walk plus had no scours systems ), but died within 20 minutes of the esophegheal feeding. is it possible i used the tube feeder incorrectly? are there better ways to handle this situation? and, is there any clear cut way to know if a young calf has not yet nursed?
