Pictures tell most of the story, but...

We fill the totes a little more than 3/4 full of water, then add 12 bags of Manganese Sulfate powder and 3 bags of fine sugar.  In order to mix this successfully it will have to be added slowly while the pump circulates the water. I've used an old planter box and cut a small hole ( 1.5" )in the bottom. This will let the powder flow into the tank at a constant rate.  It takes 8 totes of mixed manganese sulfate and one with just water to fill one 2500 gal storage tank. That tank will foliar feed about 1000 acres of soybeans at the approximate rate of 2lbs active Manganese Sulfate /a. Take whatever you need from the tank to cover the acres in your sprayer and fill the rest with water. We apply at 15 to 20 gal/a depending on other ingredients in the foliar mix.  In cases of severe Mn deficiency, you may have to make two applications per year.  I'd like to get the first shot on last week of June before the beans flower which is usually the time they show the deficency. Takes a couple of days and they green right up. Manganese is important for seed germination.  The mixing takes about a half day.

***The Manganese Sulfate is very eye irritant so wear googles or safety glasses. It's also hard on the hands, so a pair of gloves would come in handy. First time I mixed the stuf I got nosebleed from the dust. Now I wear a mask at all times.  Once you figure out how to handle the stuff it's not all that bad.

How much $ is MnS? Also, are you saying you blend 4 lbs per gallon? Trying to figure out the math.

I don't have those numbers in front of me but I think it's less than $5 an acre. Maybe even half that.

We use this as well but just add it in the inductor as we load. What is the sugar added for?We would go on veggies.

Energy source for the plant and food source for soil microbes.

Never even thought about adding the bags throught he inductor. We would have to add about 5 bags to each sprayer. That could take a while.  Are you using the powder form as well or something more corse?

Doug, how many lbs can you dissolve per gallon of water? Also, is this plain MnS or greenhouse grade? Oh,powder....

Doesn't a non chelated product have to go into the soil for availability?

This seems like a lot of work. For less than five an acre you can buy a product called smart trio or manron both are compatible with roundup. Or if your feeling saucy and can part with 9 bucks, system ready works great.

But he is getting a whole bunch more product for a lot less money, however is it available to the plant?  I put some manganese sulfate in furrow this year, $1.50 will get 1/3 pound of manganese.  I didn't like how the powder mixed though, settled out over time and had orfice plugging.

Seems to work for me. It has for many years.  One thing I've heard mention over and over is that Manganese will tie up rapidly if applied to the soil, no benefit to the plant. It has to be foliar applied.

Thanks for sharing your system, Clay! The sulfate product will go into the leaf just fine...the trick is to include some form of spreader-sticker so it spreads evenly over the leaf surface rather than beading. Any foliar spray needs to sit on the leaf in the liquid form so it can be absorbed...once the spray solution dries it just sits there on the surface.

Our experience with the chelates is that they work just fine if you didn't actually have a deficiency and the crop was going to green up anyway. For a true deficiency, there is no replacement for actually applying enough to feed the crop.

Keith, Would the surfactant Amigo be sufficient if I added it to the foliar mix?  I'm planning on throwing in some Select herbicide for grass control.  I will also be adding a lot of liquid fish which is oily in nature.  Your thoughts?

I'm not sure anyone has done a complete comparison of the various options for oils and surfactants, but I suspect that pretty much any surfactant should do the job. The fish oil may actually get in the way, since it will bind with one end of the soap molecules, but as long as the amount isn't too extreme it shouldn't hurt too much. Main thing is that you are getting enough product on!
