OK Guys here is how you do it.

Make a row that is the length of 1/1000 of an acre.

Check 5 spots per 40 acre field, and yes you have to walk to the back of the farm! I usually get past the headlands the walk 40 to 60 paces then jump over 4 to 8 rows to start my check. String out the rope and count the ears, NOT THE PLANTS. Then go back adn check the kernel counts on the 5th, 11th, 19th, and 24th ear to get an average.

This will give you a good ear population and kernel counts. I take the kernel counts and divide my 95,000 or 105,000 depending on what i think the test weight will be.

Any fool can find and ear that will show 300+ bu/acre.

So far in NW iowa I am coming up with 195 to 238 bu/acre. A tad better than last year. If the test weight is high this year I think I can add 5 to 8 bu/acre
