Subject: A wine and dine weekend

West Central Wisconsin
My wife and I had opportunities to sample some delicious food and drink this past weekend. Starting last Thursday evening a local liquor store sponsors a wine and micro brew tasting event to raise money for the area cancer support organization. Beer and liquor vendors offered thirty different micro brews and forty to fifty wines and liqueurs for sampling. Friday night found us in Madison for the annual Food and Wine Show. Over 150 vendors there offered food products from cheese and bread to sausages and catering hors d'oeuvres. Craft beer brewers and wineries poured samples of their products which numbered well over one hundred. Saturday night we were back in our home town to feast on a German Oktoberfest Beer Dinner. An ambitious young chef at a local restaurant is making a name for himself by hosting special events where he can showcase his talents. The five course meal featured pickled salad, mussels and prawns, a sausage plate with red cabbage kraut and boiled potatoe, a smoked pork chop on walnut spaetzle and mushroom strudel and lastly a sauteed apple with cinnamon ice cream. A different German or American Oktoberfest style beer was paired with each course. This young chef has hosted a couple of wine dinners in the past and last spring we attended a wild game feast with over ten different wild meats. We began our diets on Sunday. Joe.
