Central NE | It was a sad day today. Had a 14 year old cow preg check open and hauled her to the processor. She was the Matron of the herd, raised on a bottle and she was part human I think. She hurt her ankle two years ago, and she lost a lot of her spunk after that. She was the friendliest cow I've ever had. OK, now that I got the sappy stuff out of the way, I was wondering how these numbers stack up.
She weighed 1,650 pounds which was alot more than I expected (although she was never underfed :>) . The processor paid on a dressed basis and she had a dressed weight of 843 pounds which translates to a 51.55% yield. Is this yield normal for an open old cow, or has there been some excessive trimming?
