The FGDC reports today that Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar has announced the adoption of a Wetlands Mapping Standard. The standard includes minimum requirements and guidelines for efforts to map wetlands.

The new standard is designed to guide current and future wetlands digital mapping projects and enhance the overall quality and consistency of wetlands data. Quality data on wetlands are considered critical for planning effective conservation strategies to benefit fish and wildlife resources now and in the future.

The FGDC-endorsed standard (PDF) began with a proposal published in 2006 and has been working through the FGDC standards process for several years.

Wetlands mapping efforts are overseen at the national level by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and presented at the National Wetlands Inventory (NWI).
