Subject: Oil-based vs latex exterior paint?

Cherokee County, Northwest Iowa
Learned something today. I started scraping on 45 year old garage, cedar siding painted with latex paint. I was sure standard procedure was to spot-prime bare spots with oil-based primer followed by latex overcoat. I called lumber yard, who said new recommendation is to paint entire garage with oil primer, followed by latex. Always thought oil over latex was a no-no, but they said things change.

So my next question-would you use oil or latex for the finish coat? I am kinda old school, think oil paint is better, but perhaps latex is the better paint of the two now? Granted clean-up with warm, soapy water is nicer than mineral spirits/gas. Assuming clean-up procedures were equal, which would you recommend????

Any thoughts greatly appreciated. As usual, thanks in advance. Bruce
