Subject: Hydraulic/log splitter design

Le Sueur VIA St.Thomas
Good evening,

Some day, I will have collected enough parts (on the cheap) to build my own log splitter. I currently have an eaton pump (~17GPM, 2250 psi, single stage, 20 HP max recommended engine) that I would likely pair up with a 5"x36" ram (that i still need to find/purchase).

I picked up a couple engines over the winter, one 16HP and one 18HP- One will end up on the splitter . Now the only unknown for me is the hydraulic reservoir. I want to do it right; how many gallons should my system hold? I assume there is some sort of formula for this - does duty cycle play a role in this?

TIA -jim
