Nebraska | I found him this afternoon about 4pm, first calf heifer that I thought had lost her calf this summer. Normal calving should be in September. She didn’t have a belly or a bag that I ever saw.
Went to water them out on the cornstalks and saw one standing by her lonesome, drive by and find her with a newborn calf. She had licked the side that was up, but he was laying flat, head back. Mouth and tongue were cold, dead cold.
I picked him up... holy Moses! Must be 70-80 lb calf, thought he might expire from shock on the 1/2 mile ATV ride back home.
Got him in a heated shop(cranked heat to 80) and got him a warm bath for about 45 minutes. Took another hour with a heat gun and towels to get him dry.
He is better, he can throw his head around now, but is still cold and can’t sit up.
He gets the shivers now... is that good or bad?
He responds to my touch, so seems to be alert, but mouth and tongue are still rather cool.
Oh yeah, I did put a qt of warm clostridium mix in him first with a bag & tube.
