Subject: 3196 CAT getting water in oil fom "somewhere"

NC Missouri
Had water disappearing from radiator this fall. No external leak. No obvious water in the engine oil or going out the blow'by tube.
An unaware operator ran the engine when it was too low to accurately read the temperature due to the disappearing water problem and got the engine "HOT" before it shut down. A week or so later we started showing water in the oil.
My question is: Where should I be looking for a water leak? Bad head gasket? Should I have the head checked for a crack or warping? Do the cylinders have O'rings that could be damaged? Anything else I should be considering?
Plan to do an overhaul while it's tore down but want to make sure I solve the water leak problem as well.
Thanks for any advise. Dan
