North Iowa | I am currently hiring my corn stalks and hay ground. The custom guy does a great job but I am wondering if it would be cost efficient to own and grind my own. This time of year I use 7,000-8,000 pounds a day of ground stalks and hay. Maybe half to a fourth of that in the summer when cows are on grass. I am charged $13 a ton. Have done just a little looking around and looks like I could buy an older Haybuster 1100 for $8-10,000. What do you all do as far as grinding for your operations? What do you think operating cost on ownership and use on a grinder might be. Thanks for the input!
