Subject: Discs - do they really create a hardpan?

Southeast Ohio
I've seen this mentioned, that discs create a hardpan/compaction - what the mechanism that this happens? Or is this even true?
Is this related to the type or disc, or the spacing of discs, or the speed at which tillage was done?

Just never seemed logical to me. Sure, the soil below the depth of the disc is more compact as it is undisturbed, but actually more compacted?

Thanks for any help.
