![](/profile/get-photo.asp?memberid=800&type=profile&rnd=453) Alton, Ia | I have one cattle fountain that's causing me issues, it's an old one that waters our 5 head cow herd. Occasionally, the valve flutters repeatedly, making it overflow. Feeding it, there is a short air leg underneath, supposedly put there 40 years ago to stop water hammer. Fountain was not used for many years, and back then it was for a 100 head, so the water probably rarely stopped.
I'm wondering if the air leg is causing the problem, when the float stops the air compresses, then expands, etc. Whereas water would not. I'd like to take it out, but there is that 40 year thing, it's frozen solid, removal will be difficult. But I will if it solves the problem. It could be the valve too, but that too is frozen solid. It does seal off flow when the ball is not bouncing.
What say y'all, cattle fountain experts. Thanks for the help.
