Subject: Westfield 8-71 lift cylinder

Snipesville, GA
Ours started slowly leaking down Friday. Ball valve was shut and even took hose a loose from tractor. No oil coming out of hose but leaking down. I know now that the packing is leaking. I go to shop and cut me a piece of angle iron to use as a stop. Start letting auger up and woosh the packing blows just as auger comes off bin a few inches. Go get the Lull and finish picking it up.
These are one way cylinders so I assume condensation rusted the barrel and ripped the packing. How do you keep the upper end from rusting internally? I assume I'm correct in what happened to the packing in cylinder.
