N FLA | Some think these cows should be slaughtered to "correct the problem." I think the market swings too hard in October and November and delivers opportunity. I feel like society is richer and the beef industry more efficient when these girls have the next calf and a beginning cattlemen takes a whack at it. I recognize that the professionals drive legislation and don'the like competition, but I am also tired of young guys having to go to work for the Lykes Brothers, or Mormons, or Kempner, or whatever family ranch we are supposed to go to work for.
Let's see: I bought hay from a local farmer, delivered by a begining farmer that was caught up with his farm, bought overpriced ddg from a local e plant by way of a local feed mill, corn screenings from a local feed mill that bags locally grown corn for out of town hunters to buy "deer corn," bought rye and oats seed from a local dealer grown and bagged by local farmers, pay a high school kid to help me on Saturdays, pay a retired guy to haul cows from sale, pay another small farmer to plant the seed, pay a custom applicator to spread fertilizer, my fertilizer salesman is a single dad with a 7 year old daughter-he gets 2% commission to buy her clothes, shoes, make a house payment. Cows and their calves will run back through the livestock market again, paying 4 1/2% commission and fees, employing some staff, paying local taxes, etc.
I just don't believe society is better off "fixing the problem" by chopping the heads off bred cows because a guy lost his lease. But it is a philosophical difference I believe. I have read on here many times, actually again this week in Market Talk that society would be richer if these cows went to slaughter as "intended." I usually here from sellers they are happy that someone like me bid up their cow $30 or $50 over kill price. They say their intent in selling was that they go to the highest bidder. Imagine that.
