Subject: How to wire in a volt gauge to something with a push button start?

Crawfordsville, Arkansas
Maybe I'm overthinking this but how should I wire in a voltage gauge to something with a push button start? Got a old piece of equipment that's 24 volt. Simply push the button and it starts. Has mechanical gauges for oil and water temp but I'm needing a voltage gauge also. If I wire it up the way the diagram shows it'll show voltage 24/7 and I'd assume that would run the batteries down over time. This doesn't get much use on a weekly basis to charge the batteries back up.

I want to stick with the push button start switch. Wiring is sparse on this thing so keeping it simple is number one.
