N FLA | I don't know if any of you have read Dr. Albrecht. (Law Farm has I know). Anyway, some of you understand that the south and southeast is a different place than the fertile prairies where the buffalo roam. I guess with this I wanted to make a point. An animal and a production system (cow calf) that works in the south might look different than what works in the north and west. Just like we can only try to spoonfeed and baby a corn crop so much before you spent more than you make. Cattle are no different.
I'm the first to admit I have learned "if you can't make money feeding cows, you won't make any starving them." But wanted to share this photo from a local farm field. This is really the most common soil type in our region and is used for crops, grazing, and forestry. For grazing we are using warm season grasses which naturally have low nutrition. Maybe just a picture to have in your mind when you wonder how a cow raising s calf can get rundown differently than another part of the world.
