Subject: Losses in silage bags

all over Iowa

As a follow-up to other recent posts about bagging silage and using inoculants.
Presented by Dr. Fred Owens today at the Husker Nutrition Conference (from research done by the U. of Wisconsin and USDA) the average loss in 24 different silage bag was 16.4% of the original feed put in - 9.5% shrink from gas (fermentation byproduct) and 6.9% from spoilage (inoculant would definitely reduce the fermentation shrink).
