Subject: Dumb question about soybeans and sunlight

Southern IL
Have always drilled beans before, this year have decided to plant most in 30 inch rows, to try and achieve more uniform spacing. I know most guys probably prefer 15". My question is.....referring to sunlight....I have heard people say that 15 inch beans gather more sunlight. How? Arent all the plants in either 15 or 30" gonna be exposed to the same amount of light? I hope this doesnt sound dumb, but it really doesnt make much sense to me. Thanks in advance
