| I have a couple of questions about cows/heifers regarding our herd (I use that term loosely as our 'herd' consists of 4-H cows all of which have names!) anyway:
1. Our cows/heifers usually (over the past 6 years) have calved what would be considered late on a 285 day gestation time table - the majority calving well after 290 days or longer - however this year everything (all 3 so far) have calved right at 285 or around 280 days - just a fluke? They were all AI'ed so we are positive of bred date! Wondering why?
2. All 3 so far have had heifers - interesting - heard a couple of others say they are having lots more heifers than bull calves this year -interesting and just wondered if there might be any theory's behind why?
3. Got a bred heifer and when my AI guy bred her was really concerned about how tight she was and then when the vet sleeved her to check for age/size of calf she was really concerned with the way her pelvis was shaped and how tight her birth canal was - 2 part question-
a) how much and how soon do we help her when she starts calving?
b) is the size/shape of the cows pelvis/birth canal genetic? | |
