Subject: 4440 rear main seal... wear ring help?

S & Way E PA
I have been rebuilding the powershift in my 4440 over the last several weeks and I am coming down the home stretch. I pulled the pilot bearing and rear main seal and an ex jd tech that has been giving me advice told me to "make sure the wear ring was still in there." Well I used a seal puller to get the old rear main seal out and gouged/scored part of the thin metal band around the end of the crank that I am assuming is the wear ring. I'm sure if I put the new seal in this surface will destroy it within the first few minutes of running.

Is this the wear ring? If so, do I still need it and why does deere's rear main set that looks like it has a wear ring included automatically sub up in the computer to RE520036 which is the seal I purchased?

I'm not even sure I understand the purpose of the wear ring. Any help would be appreciated

Thanks!
