Subject: 15" vs 8" Wheat stands (pics)

South Eastern ,ILL
We decided to try some 15" wheat this year, along with some 8" drilled wheat. We ordered the backing plates for our Kinze planter, we used the large cell (blue) soybean plates to get our desired population of 1.3 million seeds per acre. On the Great Planes drill we were seeding 1.65 million SPA. The pictures are Pioneer 25R40. Other varities we tried were Sun Star 1200, FS 622, and Becks 135. We split several fields to do yield checks next summer. Some observations were , the planter wheat came up faster, the planter wheat can yield 2 bu. less due to the seed savings of 1.3 over 1.65 million, drilled wheat has now caught up and looks good also, planter speed was 5.7 mph ,drill about 7 mph. We also sprayed all the fields with 15" wheat with "Finesse"
by Dupont for weed control. Several area farmers have planted 15's this year, around the county. It will be interesting to watch the wheat during the growing season. * I might add , years ago we planted 10" wheat with a JD 520 drill,
never did notice a yield drag at all.
