I have zero machinist experience, I just know some basic stuff from taking things in and watching youtube.
I wanted to mess around with a lathe and a milling machine and see how far I could go with it and then decide whether to go to a local school and actually take a class or if messing around is actually getting me somewhere.
So I thought a lathe would be the first thing to get, I was thinking if I got a small bench top used that would be the lowest risk option. However, there are some ancient beauties out there, from the 30's and 40's, which concerns me about the availability of tooling and parts and so on. So how wary should I be of buying an older lathe? Or is the stuff available or machinable? Anything i should look out for or avoid?
I figure if I get my feet wet and I like it I will hunt down a big monster at an auction. TIA | |
