Had a heifer freshen on Saturday. Rather routine, we assisted but it was a rather easy pull.
Nice, growthy 2 year old.
She drank 25 or so gallons of warm water afterwards. We offer this to all new moms.
She milked an entire bucket-full the first milking out of a really nice looking udder.
Soon afterwards, she started breathing rather rapidly and pushed a lot. She didn't clean.
That evening she was alert and looked fairly happy but still breathing somewhat rapidly.
The next morning, she ate a few bites of feed but still rapid breathing. Temp 102. Eyes
looked good. Last night we called the vet because she was a little wobbly and started kicking
at her gut. I was thinking RDA. Vet said it was not. She drank a couple gallons of water.
He did not know what was wrong, but she really went downhill and died a half-hour after he left.
Thoughts?
