Subject: 1984 kenworth removing series parallel switch

Last summer had trouble with a series parallel switch so we removed it a changed the starter from a 24 v to a 12 v starter. Now when you turn the key the truck will start some times and some times it will not. It will start if you short it out. Talked to kenworth and they said that if I screwed up in removing the series parallel switch and re wiring the truck it would not start. But since it will start some times Kenworth said it must be a faulty starter with a dead spot in it. Changed starter and same result start some times and some times not. Exciter wire at starter that comes from ignition shows 12 v sometimes and 6 v some times. Changed ignition thing maybe it was faulty no such luck. Start some times some times not. Does anybody have any ideas on where the problem would be?
Thanks
