Subject: starting a herd?

Southern Middle Tennessee
I'm thinking about getting a small herd of cattle started over the next couple of years and just wondered how most of you guys got yours started. I'd like to go with a purebred herd. Preferably angus or polled hereford. I haven't made my mind up just yet. We've been strictly row crop farmers but trying to diversify my operation.

I thought about approaching some local cattle producers and talk to them about buying a few cows just to get going. What weight would be best to start with? A mama cow or heifers that haven't calved before? Thanks for any info on how you all got started.
