Subject: Is Your iPhone Watching You?

Rock County, MN

It's getting harder to be a terrorist, a criminal, or an unfaithful spouse - at least if you have an iPhone with iOS4, the latest update to Apple's mobile operating system. But what if you're not doing anything illegal or immoral? It doesn't matter, warn privacy advocates. You're still being watched, at least by your iPhone, iPod touch, iPad or Apple TV.

Recently, data scientists Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden discovered an unencrypted and unprotected tracking file that contains latitude and longitude coordinates along with timestamps. This file, consolidated.db, can be accessed on your iOS4 mobile device or via any computer with which the device is synched. According to Allen, consolidated.db can hold tens of thousands of data points as far back as one year ago.

That might be handy if you need to remember when you took that train trip from New York to Washington, D.C., but are you concerned about this invasion of your privacy? Well, don't press the panic button just yet. According to the researchers, there's no evidence that any of this information is leaving your iPhone. Still, if you'd like to see where you've been on an interactive map, just download this open-source application here.
