Subject: Managing soybean cost

Freeburg, IL
This is more of a question for those that drill soybeans from 180,000 seeds per acre on up. With the move to RR2Yield soybeans and a huge cost increase, is anyone considering moving to a planter (15", 20", 22", twins, 30", 36", whatever) to reduce your seed input?

If you were sowing beans at 225,000 seeds per acre and we'll just assume that Monsanto is talking about you as the guy with the $74/ac seed cost. If you went to 15" rows and planted 155,000 (I use these numbers from what we did 10 years ago drilling and our 15" beans this year). So your seed cost just went down 38%. So now you're saving over $28/acre. Or maybe you go to 30" rows and plant 125,000 and your price dropped by 1/2.

So I guess my question is, if you are drilling soybeans, will you change over to a planter? Or maybe use the drill to drop 125,000 seed per acre?
