Subject: Starting Calves

NW Ohio
Background: We have been feeding out about 100 steers (8/month) for about the last 15 years. We start them as calves off of my family’s dairy farm and then raise most of them up until they are finished. We don’t have any trouble selling the fat cattle, but it seems like we are always taking a bath on the feeders because we don’t sell enough at one time for a semi-load.

So, we have been thinking about starting 40 calves at a time to sell as feeders so there are more options to sell them to. My questions are is anybody here feeding this size group, how big do you get them (300lbs, 500lbs?), and is there historical prices for these kind of calves stored anywhere, so I can try to figure out if it is worthwhile doing? Thanks in Advance.
