Subject: Yamaha Motorcycle charging

western iowa
I know this isn't truly farm related but haven't found much info elsewhere. Looking at a 1993 Yamaha Virago 535. Owner says the battery is bad but can start and run it with a battery charger on it. When you disconnect the charger it dies. Is this a sign that the motorcycle isn't charging itself? I was once told after you started a car that you could take a cable off and it should continue running if the alternator is good. Outside of buying a battery for it, then testing voltage after it has started I was just curious if anyone here knew something about this. Thanks for any help! Owner also says he had no trouble with it thru the summer riding it.
