Subject: Does weaning calves really pay?

South West MN
Post below claims weaned 30-60 day calves brought 5-10 more a hundred.

Say you weaned a calf and sold it at 550lb for $1.55 or $852.50. $852.50 divided by $1.50 is 568 lb. At 10 back the calf would need to weigh 587 lb for the same paycheck.

The calf that is left on the cow for an extra 30-60 days versus a calf that is weaned surly weighs an extra 18 lb and I don’t believe an extra 37 lb would be a stretch.

My chute has a scale, calves don’t pack on the lb the first month after weaning.

So for no more money you get to set up another pen and have a greater chance of sick cattle. 2 cents from a guy with cows that buys feeders-knife cut, banded, bulls or belly nutters.

558 at $1.38. 55 steers bulls belly nutters 33 heifers
