Subject: Butchering cows

Central Ohio
I bought some cows that were supposed to be bred in the spring and I have several that have not had calves. I have had them on pasture and feeding them a little grain all summer. I have almost given up hope that they will calve, so with cull cow prices being so low I am considering getting some put in the freezer for the family and a couple friends. There are a couple that are younger in years and in good body condition. We are thinking just some roast and mainly ground meat are what we are after. These are mid sized framed cows around 1,000 pounds. Anyone have any experience with this and have an idea how much burger you would get? I just want to make sure it is a good deal for family and friends so I don't have any issues. They are not expecting finished steer quality but it has to be better than some of the old dairy cows we have ate when we had the dairy. With cull cows being so low, I would rather pass the savings on to family than help out the packers.

Thanks for your time.
