Subject: Keeping waterer thawed

NW Missouri
I have a JUG waterer with a bad heating element. Last year I put a 40 watt bulb down in the inside cavity, which worked great to keep it thawed out, except the bulbs kept going bad (I assume due to the humidity inside). The glass part of the bulb separated from the threads a couple of times, one time the glass itself broke, etc. I had intentions of replacing the waterer this summer, but didn't get it done. So, I'm wanting a better option for this winter. Is heat tape my best bet, or is there something else that would work better? It doesn't take much heat, but it needs to be reliable and not use much power. I sure got tired of thawing the damn thing out to put another bulb in it last winter.

TIA
