North of London
Of the ill fated Dieppe Raid on August 19th 1942.

Cost a lot of men and material but probably went a long way to saving lives on D Day.

I think it is around this time in 1944 when the Allies finally started to break out of Normandy after the Germans mounted a counter attack.
They were stopped after some very heavy fighting and around August 20 the US from the south and Canadians from the north were able to cut off a large group of Germans.
It was not totally successful inputting them off but many Germans and lots of equipment was lost especially in a narrow strip of land they were using to try to escape capture. They were so desperate to avoid the enclosing Allies that they even tried running the escape road in daylight where many were slaughtered since they had no air cover and the Allies made good use of their planes.

There is your history lesson for tonight.
