Subject: its turning into a weird winter (cattle problems)

Eagle River Ontario Canada
Last winter we picked up two Holstein calves for some freezer beef. These two little guys survived last winter and all summer were very healthy gaining weight and looked strong. Now that winter has really decided to throw us into a deep freeze (-30 c last night and -34 c by Sunday) one of those little guys doesn't seem to be doing so good. This morning he was very weak when I fed grain and wasn't all that interested in going with the rest of the calves (9 other beef calves with him). But he did eat and got some water and before I left for work he was laying down eating some hay. Has anyone ever experienced this kind of behavior when we hit these low temps? After talking with some of our neighbors it sounds like the cold is really causing problems for every one with cattle this year. No one really knows what is going on. Hopefully its not a sign of more things to come.
