SW Ontario | Here's our current rotation:
1. Barley underseeded with alfalfa/grass mix (barley used for feed and straw baled)
2. Hay (fall applied manure)
3. Hay (fall applied manure)
4. Hay (fall applied manure, plowed under)
5. Corn (spring applied manure, combined, plowed)
6. Corn (spring applied manure, combined, plowed)
7. Oats underseeded with red clover (oats sold, straw baled, fall applied manure, chisel plowed)
8. Corn (spring applied manure, combined, plowed)
9. Corn (spring applied manure, chopped for silage, chisel plowed)
Repeat
The oats are a pain, they are rare here so getting rid of them can be challenging, especially compared to wheat. The straw is usually plentiful because they grow quite tall but usually end up laying flat making combining a challenge. Spring wheat is just a rare as oats here, maybe even more. It doesn't seem to do well when people have tried it in the past.
There is a lot of soybeans grown here, just not on this farm. We know nothing about them and planting time interferes with first cut hay and harvesting interferes with corn silage.
Any suggestions on how to fit winter wheat in?
