Subject: Thinking outside the box

With all the debate over crop progress reports it got me to thinking. I'm sure most of you at some point have seen the NASA satellite images of North America during July showing a certain spectrum of light denoting photosynthesis. I wonder if NASA and the USDA could somehow get together and start sharing data on certain dates, compile this information, and see if it correlates to crop progress. I know this is probably a pipe dream, but it may be a more scientific measure of crop progress as a whole. I don't know if they can separate the specrums of light given off for different crops or not.

Here's the picture I'm referring to from the NASA website .
