Subject: Corn ear size determination and growth stage

Given the wars being fought in MarketTalk about corn with rolled leaves and the resultant wild prognostications, I thought I would relearn this thing I can't recall from the old crop sciences class.

Found this article from AgriGold via Google search. Noted the date (6.19.2012) with amusement.

Says kernel rows determined from V6-12, which is mostly genetic, although severe stress from V5-7 can affect kernel rows.

Says row length determined from V12-17 which is strongly dependent on environmental conditions.

Our corn has really looked pretty good. Definitely some leaf rolling, but there is moisture 6" down if not closer to surface. I guess I am cautiously optimistic right now. Would love a soaking 3" rain (put me in line, I guess) but I think we can go for a while. Have had a lot worse starts fighting drenching wet springs the last 8 years.

PS - dad just texted. Radar looks to get some rain tonight. Fingers crossed.

Good luck to all on whatever weather you are wishing for!
