Subject: Nitrate from Alfalfa ?

Black Hawk County, IA
Have a couple fields that were alfalfa for 4-5 years, this year went to corn. Put 30 gallons of 32% down with herbicide pre. Just pulled 12" and 24" deep samples to see if sidedressing needed. Came back 16-22 ppm. Was expecting it to be higher. No excessive rains yet. Hasn't moved that deep yet? Question is, is the "N" from the alfalfa in a different form that the test is not picking up? Guessing it is like a slow releases that becomes available as decomposition occurs. Visually, it is the best looking corn around. Thoughts? J
