Subject: Activated Carbon: herbicide safener or toxin binder?

northeastern Ohio
I purchased a farm a few years ago. In one building, there is a stack of bags of "activated carbon" (Darco S-51). The previous owner died in 2010, so I cannot ask what these were intended to be used for.

I did a google search and see that one of the uses of AC is as a herbicide safener: https://books.google.com/books?id=gVG_d8ocd5cC&pg=PA251&lpg=PA251&dq...

Google also indicated that AC was used as a toxin binder in animal feed: http://www.progressivedairy.com/topics/feed-nutrition/charcoal-powd...

This was a dairy farm for years, so it could have been used in the feed. But the building with the AC is not real close to where they would mix feed. This building was used to store ear corn and actually had a dryer that blew hot air under the floor to dry the ear corn. The AC was stored in a lean-to on the side of this building.

Anyhow.... I'm curious to know what this activated carbon may have been used for. Anyone have any guesses?
