Western OK | Just about finished up drilling milo for the year. Got one place left that were baling the wheat off of that we want to put in. This is our first time drilling milo and our first milo in 4 years. I used to put it in with a 36 inch row white planter but I sold it awhile back. We're using our new to us 1890ccs drill with the front rank locked up to give us 20 inch spacing. Most of this ground was wheat harvested in 15 some was soybeans. Figuring out the drill took a bit, the book says open the gates to notch 1 but some of the rows wouldn't put out any seed at notch 1, seed is fairly large at 13000 per lb, so we opened them up to 2 and then it was fine. Those gates are kindof cheesy imo. Set the drill for around 40k and by the time we sowed everything I think we ended up at around 45-50k by the time you figure all the turning and stuff on our goofy shaped fields. About half of the acres sown were notill and the rest we worked once with the spader disk. Some of the first drilled stuff is coming up buts it's real slow since we've been so cool. One funny thing about notill I noticed years ago is the jack rabbit population is higher in stubble fields. On the one quarter I counted atliest 6. My middle son got a kick out a watching them run around. The drill had population sensors on it and I had an old jd 250 monitor I hooked up to it, it worked ok but beeped alot even with the low rate set at half the seeding rate, does anybody have a recommendation for a better system that won't break the bank? It did happen to catch one instance that turned out to be a piece on paper in front of a roller in the hopper though.
