Subject: Need some cover crop advice from the experts

North East IL
I was at a watershed meeting recently and saw a study that Illinois state is doing with seeding a rye cc possible mix with in the fall ahead of corn, then applying fall nh3 with nserve and end result of reducing lost nitrates substantially.

Questions are this: is cereal rye the best option, or should we add something else? Looking to do this as cheap as possible for the best bang for the buck.I know there's plenty of junk wheat that I could get, also.

My thoughts today were to band our dry with our strip till rig with half or a little less of total N. Plant it green in the strips and kill it, throw in 10 lb of N with chemicals, then side dress the rest of the n as 32.

I'm new to cover crops but not scared of killing something in the spring. We've got some heavy clay soils and spring NH3 isn't a great option on some of our tougher ground.

Thanks for the input guys, hopefully I've given enough info for some good advice.
