Subject: irrigation experiment

Clark SD

I decided to try scheduling irrigation on the basis of the soil temperature at the 6 to 10 inch depth. I am going to try to maintain a temperature of around 75 degrees F at those depths. This will happen on a 20 acre half circle that has a pretty uniform soil type. The reason i want to this is to get more root growth in that part of the soil profile.
Last year our irrigated corn didn't yield up to par compared to the dryland. While trying to figure out why this happened the only thing that stood out to me was the cooler soil temperatures in that part of the profile, for the irrigated.

Here are some recent temperatures where i am going to do the experiment.
