Subject: Cover crop after chopping silage

south central ill effingham county
Just trying to get a plan for next year. We will have 40 acres of corn next to our pasture, we will probably chop a little over half of it and combine the rest. Thinking about planting some rye after we chop and then after we pick the corn set up a hot fence and turn the cows out. That would give the cover crop at least a month to grow. Should we mix anything else with the rye like turnips or radishes. Also will the cows just binge on the rye grass and not touch the stalks. The calves will be weaned off these cows in September so it will be about 90 head on 40 acres, will we get a month or two out of this. Any comments appreciated, have never messed with cover crops.
