Subject: good buying day

N FLA
I got 7 head of feeder cows yesterday. I really like to buy thin cows 750# @ 0.75, but after further evaluation im going up to 0.85/86 just one bid above slaughter buyers. A lot of BTOs are buying bigger thin open cows and paying up to 1.05, but I stay out of their way. Markwright used to tell me to dance with the girl that brung ya. Dont get fancy. So I got 7 head yesterday. My last sale of the year. 2 were 4 months bred. I will feed them silage until May and put them on grass until Labor Day and split the pairs then. Both of those were smooth mouth cows. Feeders ranged from smooth mouth to 6 teeth. They will eat silage until ready to sell and then I'm sure the slaughter buyers will buy them. The University nutritionist said a bred cow should gain 3# per day on my silage with just a mineral supplement. My model is to sell them @ 1.10/lb. These cows yesterday should gain quickly on silage.

Was a good sale yesterday. Somebody preg checked a big ranch and sold 50 open cows. Nutrition probably prevented many from getting bred. Most weeks we only see 50 cows total at this sale barn.

Still trying to get financing together to keep buying in the next year to utilize my 250 tons of silage. I would like to put together about 40 head of April to May calving cows. Should have grass to run them until Labor Day.
